Work diary - depth

Work diary - depth:

In this session we was given the topic of depth. I found that with this topic the main way of getting a good picture was the positioning of the camera. I found that during this session I was taking a longer time to get the right angles and lighting so it took me a little longer to take the picture. I also found that I ended up with less pictures as I found it hard to see depth in some of the things that were around me.

Progression: If I was to shoot this topic again I would try to find some more original ways to photograph depth as I found that the photographs that I took were of generic ways that have a clear depth in them. I think that to move my work forward I need to find others ways to show depth and attempt to be more creative. The image below is an example of how I could attempt to do so. I like the way that an object has been put in place as a new way to show the depth of something.

I think that the picture above and the picture below are my best pictures. I think its shows how depth can be found both outdoors and indoors. I think the picture above shows depth in a very natural setting. I also like this picture because there is nothing distracting you from looking towards the end. I like the picture below because it shows depth in a more confined setting. I also like this picture because nothing was altered for me to take this picture it was just taken.

I have chosen to include these pictures from the internet because I think they show depth in both its natural setting also with objects. I think  the picture above shows depth with objects really well. it shows how the further down you look the objects look smaller even though they are the same size. I also like this picture because only the front post is the post is the one where you can tell what it is the rest of them you cant clearly tell. I chose the picture below because it show depth in a natural setting. the depth in this picture helps to show that something would be moving down the train tracks. it also shows how there is something there at the end but you cant quite tell what it is.

Definition post - depth

Definition post - depth:

Dictionary definition: the distance from the top or surface to the bottom of
something.

Describing words of depth: deepness, distance downwards, distance inwards, distance away, drop, vertical drop.

I have chosen these pictures because I think they are the best at showing depth in photography. I think the first picture shows how you can make depth out of house hold objects and also how depth is about the angle that you take the picture from. I also think its hows the basic idea of depth as its something that goes on and disappears into the distance and gets smaller. I chose the second picture because it shows how a single object on its own can show depth. the depth in the picture is created completely by the angle that the camera has been placed to take the picture from. I chose the last picture as although it doesn't show depth in as clear as way as the others, its still showing depth, as the main focus gets smaller and is continuous. I also think that the way the light is used helped to make it look more 3-D.

My definition of depth: A continuous distance from the start to the end of something.

Image bank - dept

Image bank - depth:

I have chosen these pictures because they show the effects that depth can have. They also show how different the image can look depending on the angle that the picture is taken. I think the pictures I have chosen shows the range in effect that depth can have on a image. these pictures show how depth can completely alter an image. They also show the different techniques of depth. These images also appear to be 3-D due to the depth.

In these two images depth is shown through a path or tunnel. In the image above the use of the tunnel makes it appear as if theres a journey to go on. The tunnel gets smaller as to goes on which helps to get an idea of the distance between the starting point and the end of the tunnel. By showing depth in this way you can clearly see a journey of a small space but you can't actually see what is at the end of the journey. In the image below depth is shown in a wider space, this time a path way to the sea is used. In this image you can't tell how far away the sea actually is but you can tell its the end goal as its clearly visible. This use of depth gives a clearer view of the area in the picture.

In the two images above and below, blurring has been used to help to show depth. In the image above the bottles have been placed in a line at an angle to show a line of bottles progressing into a distance. The use of blurring in this image helps to make it seem as if the bottles are going into the distance. In the image below the use of the birds is able to make it appear as if they are going into the distance. The gaps in between each of the birds helps to give the distance between them, the further down the line you follow this distance becomes less and less visible. The blurred ones at the end of the view help to give the impression that they are going further and further into the distance.

In the images above and below lines are used to help to show depth. The use of lines in the image above help you to follow it along to the end of the image. The line at the very front of the photo is where you focus to see the depth, yet the small lines of the piano is what helps to give the image character. The lines help you to be able to see what the photo is as the majority of it is blurred. The image below uses lines to show the bridge progress. The straight lines in this image clearly show the bridge going of into the distance, using lines is the simplest way of doing this as its easy to follow.
